Purposes of Information Systems

Operations support systems and management support systems are classification of information systems.
P.S : The main purposes of information systems is to support of business operations and support managerial decision making.
In here i'd like to explain about the classification of Operations Support Systems and Management Support Systems

Classifications of Operation support systems
This system is to support of business operations
  • Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) : A system that performs and records the daily routine transactions, to process data resulting from business transaction, maintain records about the exchanges and produce business documents. 
  • Process Control Systems (PCS) : A system to monitor specialized devices and processes within a controlled environment or to monitor and control industrial processes.
  • Enterprise Collaboration Systems (ECS) : A system that is used to help groups of workers easily share, communicate and coordinate their progress.
Classifications of Management support systems
This system is to support managerial decision making
  • Management Information Systems (MIS) : A computer system designed to help managers plan and direct business and organizational operations.
  • Decision Support Systems (DSS) : A computer-based system that enables management to interrogate the computer system on an ad hoc basic for various kinds of information on the organization and to predict the effect of potential decisions beforehand.
  • Executive Information Systems (EIS)  : Is type of MIS, DSS and other source that facilitates and supports senior executive information and decision making needs.
Other classifications of Information systems
Several other categories of information system can support either operation or management applications
  • Expert Systems : Knowledge-based systems that provides expert advice and act as expert consultants to users.
  • Knowledge Management Systems : Knowledge-based system that support and making more efficient the creation organization and dissemination of business knowledge within in enterprise.
  • Strategic Information Systems : Support operations or management processes where information services resources are applied to strategic business opportunities in such a way that the computer systems have an impact on the organization's products and business operations.
  • Function Business Systems : Support a variety of operational and managerial applications of the basic business function of a company.
